As we gear up for the holidays, many local students are struggling to stay fed and make ends meet. This winter, you can help to provide food and other basic items for local middle and high school students.

In November and December, stop by most City Library locations to find a Giving Tree. Take a tag with a list of needed items, then drop off your donations at the same Library by December 31. Giving Trees will be at the Main Library and the Anderson-Foothill, Day-Riverside, Glendale, Marmalade, and Sprague branches (click here for location details). Items will be donated to Highland, East, and West High, Glendale and Bryant Middle Schools, and the Salt Lake Center for Science Education.

Many local high school students do not have enough to eat, without reliable access to regular meals. Feeding America reports 12.3% of Utah households experience food insecurity, and 50% of Salt Lake School District children qualify for free and reduced price meals according to Utahns Against Hunger. Fox13 reports 60% of East High students live at or below the poverty line.
