Construction Underway on Main Library’s Crescent Wall
One of the iconic features of the Salt Lake City Public Library’s Main downtown location is getting some upgrades. Construction began this morning on the Crescent Wall, the swooping feature that wraps around the north and east side of the Main Library, tapering off near the southeast section of Library Square. For over 20 years, the Crescent Wall’s gently sloping steps have led visitors on a winding, meditative path for those taking the long way to the Library’s Rooftop Terrace. The Wall is frequently used as a site for photoshoots and has been a striking backdrop for events like the Utah Arts Festival.
Wear and tear to the infrastructure has necessitated upkeep and renovation, which has commenced now that the main portion of the Library’s rooftop renovation has been completed. The project will replace the existing waterproofing with a more modern and durable system, update the lights to energy efficient LEDs, add more safety features, and make needed repairs.
Paulsen Construction and GSBS Architects are overseeing this project. The cost is estimated to be roughly $7 million, paid for from the Salt Lake City Public Library’s savings at no additional cost to taxpayers. The east entrance of the Library will remain open for the most part, though short closures may be necessary.
